Commercial Display vs Consumer TV: A Project Checklist

By Robertson AV ·

If you are specifying screens for a lobby, a training room or a whole building, the question comes up early: why not just buy consumer TVs? Sometimes you can. This checklist walks through the differences that decide it, with figures taken from manufacturer spec sheets for displays we list.

1. Duty rating: how many hours a day it is built to run

A duty rating is the manufacturer’s statement of how long each day a panel is designed to stay on.

Count the hours the screens will really be on. A lobby that is open from morning to evening fits 16/7. A 24-hour facility, transit area or control room points to 24/7. Consumer TVs generally do not publish a duty rating, so read the maker’s terms for commercial use before putting one in a business.

2. Brightness

Display Brightness (typical) Rated hours
Samsung QB55C / QB50R / QB55B-N 350 nits 16/7
Panasonic TH-43CQ2U / TH-55CQ2U / TH-75CQ2U 400 cd/m² 16 h/day
Samsung BE98D-H (98″) 400 nits 16/7
Samsung QM55B / QM55C / QM65C 500 nits 24/7
NEC MultiSync C751Q 350 cd/m² max (250 as shipped) 24/7

Nits and cd/m² are the same unit. For a normally lit office or classroom, 350 nits is a common starting point. Screens facing windows or sitting in bright retail space are better served by a 500-nit model. Direct sunlight is a different job and calls for a purpose-built outdoor display.

3. Surface haze and glare

Some sheets list a haze percentage. Higher haze scatters reflections for a more matte look, while lower haze keeps the picture clearer. The QB55C lists 2% and the TH-43CQ2U lists 1%; the QM55B and QM65C list 25%, and the NEC C751Q lists 28%. Look at the room’s ceiling lights and windows before choosing.

4. Control ports

On a multi-screen job, nobody wants to power displays on with a handheld remote. The Samsung QB and QM models list RS-232C in/out and RJ45. The Panasonic CQ2 displays list a 9-pin RS-232C port and RJ45 LAN, and the NEC C751Q lists LAN, RS-232 and a remote jack. If a control system or an IT team will manage the screens, confirm the ports match before ordering.

5. Portrait use and mounting

Signage is often mounted in portrait. The QB55C, QB50R, QB55B-N, QM55C and the NEC C751Q list both landscape and portrait. The Panasonic CQ2 series is landscape, with a 0 to 20 degree forward tilt for high mounting. Check the VESA pattern as well: 200 x 200 mm on the QB55C and QM55B, 400 x 300 mm on the QM65C, and 400 x 400 or 600 x 400 mm on the C751Q.

6. Playing content without a PC

  • Built-in system: the QB55C runs Tizen 7.0 with 8 GB of storage (3 GB available), and the QM55B runs Tizen 6.5 with 16 GB.
  • Slot-in computers: the C751Q has an OPS slot and an NEC Compute Module slot, and the V323-2 has an OPS slot.
  • External player: the BrightSign LS424 handles 1080p60 video and entry-level HTML5, stores content on microSD, and connects by HDMI and Ethernet.

7. Tuners and wireless

For live TV in a waiting area, check for a tuner. The Panasonic CQ2 series has an ATSC/NTSC tuner with an F connector, and the Samsung BE98D-H lists an ATSC/ClearQAM tuner. For locked-down networks, the QB55B-N is the version with no Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, while the QB55C, QM55B and QM65C include both.

When a consumer TV is enough

A small meeting room that runs a few hours a day, shows whatever is on HDMI and needs no scheduling or remote management can be fine with a consumer set. Go commercial if any of these apply: the screen runs most of the day, it is portrait or hard to reach, IT must manage it, it plays signage on its own, or wireless radios are not allowed.

FAQ

What does 16/7 mean?
The panel is designed to run up to 16 hours a day, 7 days a week. 24/7 means designed for continuous use.

Can a commercial display go in a home?
Yes, it still has HDMI inputs. Check first whether it has a tuner and whether its smart platform suits your needs, since signage platforms differ from streaming TVs.

Are nits and cd/m² the same?
Yes. One nit is one candela per square meter.

Do I need a separate media player?
Not always. A display with a built-in system, like the QB55C, can play content itself. A player such as the LS424 helps when you want the same content setup across different screens.

350 or 500 nits?
500 nits holds up better in bright rooms and near windows. In a normally lit office, 350 is usually enough.
