The RDL RU-BNF is a bidirectional audio network interface that connects RDL Format-A sources and receivers with a Dante network. In the Format-A-to-Dante direction, signal pairs A, B and C supply three Dante channels, while a balanced or unbalanced auxiliary line input supplies the fourth channel. In the Dante-to-Format-A direction, three received Dante signals feed Format-A output pairs A, B and C, and a fourth signal feeds the balanced auxiliary line output at a nominal +4 dBu.
Ideal Use Cases
The RU-BNF is suited to systems that combine RDL Format-A devices with Dante network audio. It provides a direct way to place three Format-A source pairs and one auxiliary line source onto a four-channel Dante network connection. The corresponding receive path supports three separate Format-A output jacks plus a balanced auxiliary output. Compatibility with a wide array of RDL Format-A active and passive senders and receivers makes it appropriate for installations that already use Format-A endpoints or require Format-A distribution alongside networked audio.
Why Choose This Model
This model provides conversion in both directions within a single interface. Its defined three-plus-one channel arrangement keeps routing straightforward: three channels are assigned to Format-A pairs A, B and C, while the fourth is assigned to the auxiliary connection. The auxiliary input includes front-panel gain adjustment and a dual-LED VU meter. Individual signal LEDs indicate audio on each of the three incoming Format-A pairs and each of the four received Dante signals. Network System and Sync indicators provide visible network-status information, while the Ethernet connector includes Link and Speed indicators.
Installation and Integration
Format-A connections use RJ45 jacks and CATx cable, simplifying connection to compatible RDL modules. Dante network connectivity is provided through a 100 Mbps RJ45 Ethernet connector. The auxiliary input and output use detachable terminal blocks, and the output is balanced. The RU-BNF accepts power through either a power jack or detachable terminal block and requires 24 Vdc at 150 mA plus connected loads. An external 24 Vdc supply can also power connected Format-A modules through the RJ45 jacks. Recommended supplies are the PS-24AS for the USA and PS-24AX for international use. The enclosure measures 5.8 inches wide, 1.7 inches high and 5.2 inches deep and is equipped for rack or surface mounting. PoE and hot-standby operation are identified for the separate RU-BNFP model, not the RU-BNF in this listing.
Performance Highlights
The interface supports 24-bit analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion at 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz, with 48 kHz as the default sample rate. Its specified frequency response is 20 Hz to 20 kHz within ±0.5 dB, and THD+N is less than 0.1%. Noise below +4 dBu is specified at less than -75 dB, while CMRR is greater than 90 dB from 50 Hz to 120 Hz for any input pair. The listed crosstalk specification is less than 80 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz, and headroom above +4 dBu exceeds 18 dB. The balanced auxiliary input has an impedance greater than 20 kΩ. The auxiliary output provides a nominal +4 dBu level with an impedance of 150 Ω balanced or 75 Ω unbalanced. RDL analog filtering complements the high-resolution conversion.
What Makes It Different
The RU-BNF combines four-channel Dante transmission and reception with the specific connection architecture of RDL Format-A. Instead of treating every channel identically, it dedicates three channels to Format-A pairs and one to an auxiliary line connection in each direction. Received Format-A pairs are distributed across three separate output jacks, supporting direct connection to multiple Format-A destinations. Its 18 indicators cover power input, four power outputs, seven audio signals, the auxiliary dual-LED VU meter, network System and Sync status, and Ethernet Link and Speed status.
Final Assessment
For an installation requiring bidirectional conversion between three RDL Format-A pairs, one auxiliary line channel and a four-channel Dante network path, the RU-BNF provides a clearly organized interface. It combines 24-bit conversion, selectable 44.1 or 48 kHz operation, front-panel auxiliary level monitoring, comprehensive signal indication and flexible rack or surface mounting in a compact enclosure. Its external 24 Vdc power architecture also supports powering connected Format-A modules through the RJ45 connections.
